Fluorine application, also known as fluoride treatment, is a dental procedure in which fluoride is applied to the teeth to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in rocks, soil, water, and some foods. It has been proven to strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay.

Fluorine application is typically done during a routine dental cleaning appointment. The procedure involves applying a fluoride gel or varnish to the teeth using a small brush or tray. The fluoride is left on the teeth for a few minutes to allow it to absorb into the enamel.

After the fluoride treatment, you may be instructed not to eat, drink, or rinse your mouth for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into the teeth. Fluoride treatments are generally recommended for children, teenagers, and adults who are at high risk for developing tooth decay.

Fluoride is also commonly added to public drinking water in many communities, which has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of tooth decay in those areas. However, excessive fluoride intake can lead to dental fluorosis, which causes discoloration and mottling of the teeth. It's important to discuss any concerns about fluoride treatment with your dentist to determine if it's appropriate for your individual needs.
