A root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure that involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth and cleaning the root canals to prevent further infection or decay. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels.

Root canal treatments are typically needed when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the tooth. Symptoms of an infected or inflamed pulp include severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, swelling, and a bad taste in the mouth.

During a root canal treatment, a dentist or endodontist will numb the area around the tooth and create an opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp. They will then remove the damaged pulp, clean the root canals, and shape them to prepare for filling. Once the canals are cleaned and shaped, the dentist will fill them with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and seal the tooth with a temporary filling.

In some cases, a dental crown may be needed to protect the tooth after a root canal treatment. The crown will cover the entire tooth, providing additional support and protection.

After a root canal treatment, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups to ensure the tooth remains healthy. In some cases, a re-treatment may be needed if the infection returns or if the filling becomes damaged. In severe cases, an extraction may be necessary if the tooth cannot be saved
