Porcelain crowning, also known as a porcelain dental crown, is a type of dental restoration that is used to repair and restore damaged or decayed teeth. A porcelain crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to improve its strength, shape, and appearance.

Porcelain crowns are often used in cases where a tooth is severely damaged or decayed, and a filling or other restoration would not be sufficient to repair it. They are also used to protect teeth that have undergone root canal therapy or to cover teeth that are discolored or misshapen.

The process of getting a porcelain crown usually involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the damaged tooth by removing any decay or damage and shaping it to fit the crown. Then, an impression of the prepared tooth is taken, which is used to create a custom-made porcelain crown in a dental lab. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed on the prepared tooth to protect it.

During the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the custom-made porcelain crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth. The dentist will then adjust and polish the crown to ensure that it fits properly and looks natural.

Porcelain crowns are highly durable and can last for many years with proper care, such as regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. They are also highly resistant to staining and can be color-matched to the surrounding teeth for a natural-looking result.
